ZU/FLUCHT
Coordination of events and workshops
Berlin, 2021

ZU/FLUCHT is an outdoors exhibition on the path leading to the Exilmuseum, which will be built in the next few years at Anhalter Bahnhof. ZU/FLUCHT presents the future museum and its focus of interest. The exhibition deals, not only with the fate of refugees back then, but like the Exilmuseum it also spans a bridge to the present: for today, Germany is a country where many seek refuge.
The exhibition was created in collaboration with the Institut für Architektur, TU Berlin and built of former housing used by today’s refugees in Germany. Over two semesters, students of the Natural Building Lab engaged in analysing the units’ material, use, and possibilities for repurposing them, designed and planned this exhibition, and erected it with their own hands. For five months, the museum was temporarily located in the exhibition.
I got to join this very exciting project when they were already in the construction phase, so except for helping on the construction site I was mainly commissioned to organise workshops on site over the course of the exhibition.
The wish for the workshops were to try and involve neighbours, schools, and other instances and organisations from the direct area. The exhibition should not only create awareness about the coming museum and their work but also be a place for the very many people who live and work in the immediate area. Together with the local school we created and took care of a small urban garden on site. We also wanted to build something with people and decided to hold a furniture building workshop where the knowledge of the many that built the exhibition could be used and transferred to others. So, with plenty of interested neighbours, passer byers we built little stools that were then used for the events in the exhibition.
